The brief

The Konkan Sea Link is a 21.8 km bridge across Mumbai harbour, built to carry six lanes of traffic for at least 100 years in warm, salty sea air. The engineers needed deck steel and rebar that would resist corrosion without constant repainting.

What we supplied

We supplied 128,000 tonnes of weathering plate and corrosion-resistant rebar, rolled to a marine-grade specification at our Gävle mill. Each batch was tested for chemistry and toughness in our own lab before it shipped.

How we delivered it

The steel left Oxelösund in 22 sailings over two years, packed and labelled by deck segment so the contractor could lift it straight into place. A STRATA quality engineer was based on site in Mumbai for the whole build.

The result

The bridge opened in 2026 and cut a two-hour drive across the city to about twenty minutes. Its steel is expected to need its first major maintenance only after 50 years.
