18,000 t of sheet piles
The brief
Greenland’s capital needed a port that stays open all winter, so larger ships can bring in food and fuel even when the fjord freezes. The new 620 m deep-water quay had to handle sea ice, storms and temperatures down to −40 °C.
What we supplied
We supplied 18,000 tonnes of sheet piles and quay steel in a cold-tough grade tested to −40 °C, the same steel we use at our own ports in Narvik and Luleå.
How we delivered it
The steel shipped from Narvik in the short summer window between ice seasons, in four sailings planned around tides and weather. Our team helped the contractor plan driving sequences so the work could stop safely when storms came in.
The result
The quay opened in 2025 and now takes ships twice the size of the old harbour, all year round. Freight costs for the town have fallen and fewer supplies need to be flown in.
